FAQs
Do I need any experience?
Not at all. All workshops are beginner-friendly and guided step by step. We’ll show you the techniques, then give you space to explore, experiment and enjoy the process.
What’s included in the price?
All materials, tools, glazing and kiln firing are included for ceramic workshops (unless clearly stated otherwise on the workshop listing).
What clay do you use?
For pottery workshops we use white earthenware clay.
Can I paint my piece on the day?
Many of our workshops include decorating your piece with underglazes (ceramic paints) during the session. If a workshop is making-only and does not include painting, this will be clearly stated in the listing.
How long are the workshops?
Workshop lengths vary depending on the session. Please check the individual workshop listing for exact timings.
When will my finished piece be ready?
Ceramics take time. Pieces need to dry fully before being fired, glazed and fired again. Finished work is usually ready for collection in around 4-6 weeks, depending on kiln schedules and the nature of the piece.
How will I know when my work is ready?
We’ll contact you when your piece is ready to collect, usually by text as emails can end up in junk!
How long do you keep finished work?
We’re happy to store finished pieces for up to 6 weeks after you’ve been notified. After this time, uncollected work may be recycled or disposed of due to limited storage space. Please collect your lovely work!
Can you post my pottery?
Yes, posting may be available for an additional fee. Please contact us to arrange this once your piece is ready.
What should I wear?
Wear comfortable clothes you don’t mind getting a little clay on. We don’t offer aprons for hygiene reasons, but feel free to bring your own or buy one from the shop.
What time should I arrive?
Please arrive 5–10 minutes early so we can start on time. Late arrivals may miss key steps, and for shorter workshops we may not be able to extend the session.
Are workshops suitable for children?
Some workshops are family-friendly, while others are adults-only. Please check the individual workshop listing for age guidance and supervision requirements.
Accessibility
We want Handmade Margate to be welcoming to all, however there is a small step to enter the shop. If you have access needs or questions, please get in touch before booking so we can confirm what’s possible for the space and the session, or arrange for a ramp.
Food and drink
We offer tea and coffee, and you are welcome to bring a snack. Please keep food and drink away from clay and materials unless stated otherwise.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancellations made 14 days or more before the workshop date can be refunded or transferred.
Cancellations within 14 days of the workshop are non-refundable, as materials and preparation will already have been arranged.
If we ever need to cancel a session, you’ll be offered a full refund or the option to transfer to another date.
What if my piece cracks or breaks?
Ceramics can be unpredictable. While we handle all work with care, we can’t guarantee every piece survives drying and firing. If something goes wrong, we’ll always let you know and talk through the options.
Do you offer private workshops?
Yes — we offer private workshops for birthdays, celebrations and groups. Get in touch with your group size, preferred date and the kind of session you’re looking for.
